Bug Description

When I put a DVD into my DVD drive, it gets mounted just fine, but the disk-mount applet does not show a button for the drive.
If I put a CD into that drive, it shows up just fine.

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Is that specific to data DVDs? Does it happens with all of the data disks but none of other type? Does the DVD gets mounted and do you open a nautilus window for it?

I'm using Dapper, and it happens with both data and movie DVDs. The DVD does get mounted, and a nautilus window opens, but it does not show in the places bar, like CDs in this DVD drive or in my other CD drive.

I think this belongs to the gnome-volume-manager package, because it happens to both the places menu and the mounting applet. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Uh, no comment in the bug you linked to says that it is intended that a mounted DVD does not show up in the places menu or in the mount applet, it just says that SD-card etc readers should not show up always.

Let me clarify again exactly what is happening.
When no CD or DVD is in either of my drives, both do not show up in the places menu and in the mount applet -> fine.
When a CD is in the CD or DVD drive, the corresponding drive does show up in the places menu and in the mount applet -> also fine
When a DVD is in the DVD drive, that drive does not show up in the places menu and in the mount applet -> absolutely not fine.

Could you run /usr/share/nautilus-cd-burner/list_cddrives with the DVD in the drive and copy that to a comment?

I assume you mean /usr/lib/nautilus-cd-burner/list_cddrives :-)
Here's the output:
Drive:
  name: LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163D
  device: /dev/hdc
  door: closed
  type: CD, DVD
  is mounted: TRUE
  max read speed: 8448 KiB/s (CD 56.3x, DVD 6.2x)
  max write speed: 0 KiB/s (CD 0.0x, DVD 0.0x)
  write speeds:
Media:
  label: ''
  type: DVD (has-data)
  is writable: FALSE
  is appendable: FALSE
  capacity: 1346.38 MiB
  size: 1346.38 MiB

I also tried with another DVD, that one also gives a label of ''.
In Windows, both these DVDs do have normal labels.

Thank you for the log. Do you use dapper or edgy? You stated that you
use dapper to a previous comment but that location is the one from edgy

Do you have DVD not exhibing the issue? Do they have a '"' label too? Do you have the same label with hal-device-manager?

I previously used Dapper, but have upgraded to Edgy and still have this issue.
I just tried with another 5 DVDs, and all exhibited this behaviour.
hal-device-manager also shows an emtpy label.

Could you provide a lshal log with a DVD in the drive?

Sure, here you go.

according to that log the DVD is not mounted. What sort of DVD did you use. Does mounting the DVD from a command line make it being listed?

It's a data DVD. If I mount it manually, it still does not show up.
If I insert a movie DVD, and mount it manually, it also does not show up.

Did the lshal log help in determining the problem?
If not, is there anything else I can do?

I just installed Edgy on my new computer, with every hardware part different, except for the same DVD drive, and it still does not appear correctly.
It looks to be a general problem with Lite-On DVD drives?

Why did you change this bug to say that it affects gnome-applets?
As far as I can tell, it's a nautilus problem, because the DVD drive also does not appear in nautilus' places bar/menu.

Revision history for this message
Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote :

because nautilus has nothing to do with the applet and that was obviously wrong. If that happens to the applet and nautilus that's likely to be due to gnome-vfs2 then

I just looked at this again, and in current Feisty, this no longer happens. Marking as fixed.
