Bug Description

In Breezy my printer, HP 3816 usb, was detected straight on. In Dapper, it is not detected by gnome-cups-manager at all. No printers detected and port list gives only hp no_device_found. My printer is connected.

lsusb gives:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:1a04 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

This bug is quite a showstopper for me.

Thank you for your bug report.

Does restarting hplip followed by cups give any difference:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/hplip restart
$ sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Can you add the output of command hp-info run from a terminal as attachment.

Changed in gnome-cups-manager:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

I get the same error, but with a CANON printer (MPC200)...

Sorry that it did take so long to respond. I found more problems in my ubuntu install and decided to do a complete reinstall. Restarting hplip and cupsys did not help. The hp-info did not function properly on my install.
After a complete reinstall everything just works fine. It seems that it was a problem due to upgrading.
Sorry that I did not post earlier.

Closing this bug since the reported indicated that he was working with a broken system and a reinstall solved it.

@Guy
The Canon MPC 200 doesn't seem to be listed on http://www.linuxprinting.org, which means it isn't supported on Linux.
If you got this printer working manually on Linux please let us know which driver you use.
If you printer was autodetected in Breezy feel free to reopen this bug.

Your Canon MPC 200 seems to be loaded as a usb-storage device.
Can you check if module usblp is loaded? If not you could try to load it manually (modprobe usblp) and look at dmesg output again.

I've encountered this problem with a Samsung ML-1210 on a parallel port (/dev/lp0) from a fresh install of dapper. It seems others have too:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=199214

In my case the solution has been to run:
sudo lpadmin -p ML-1210 -v parallel:/dev/lp0
but it would be good to get this fixed.

This could be due wrong kernel in use. If you did upgrade from breezy, make sure you are running 2.6.15 kernel, and not 2.6.12. Install linux-686 package, if you have PentiumIII+ processor.

As for parallel printers goes...

Connect your printer before you stat your computer. Or, after you connect it, stop cups (/etc/init.d/cupsys stop), remove lp module (rmmod lp), start cups (/etc/init.d/cupsys start).
