It looks like the mysql server wasnt running:

Creating config file /etc/dbconfig-common/bacula-director-mysql.conf with new version
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2).
unable to connect to mysql server.
error encountered creating user:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
dbconfig-common: bacula-director-mysql configure: trying again.
dbconfig-common: writing config to /etc/dbconfig-common/bacula-director-mysql.conf

You should just do dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director-mysq

Hey chuck,
I had the same problem. I tried to perform this fix, but I'm not sure if I did it right.

nick@nick-laptop:~$ dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director-mysq
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure must be run as root
nick@nick-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director-mysq
[sudo] password for nick:
Package `bacula-director-mysq' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: bacula-director-mysq is not installed
nick@nick-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director-mysql
dbconfig-common: writing config to /etc/dbconfig-common/bacula-director-mysql.conf
granting access to database bacula for bacula@localhost: already exists.
