graphical login fails without group execute permission on home directory

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Logging in through gdm fails if group execute permission is not set for the user's home directory. I don't think it should be necessary for a user to allow group execute permission on their home directory in order to have a usable desktop account

This can be be reproduced by creating a new user, and removing group execute permission on the user's home directory and then attempting to login with gdm.

The login procedure begins, then the console text is seen briefly before the gdm login is displayed again. No hint of what is causing the login to succeed in the X log files and nothing is written to .xsession-errors.

Thanks for your bug report. Does this still happen to you? Is this still a problem in Edgy?
