Bug Description

Binary package hint: gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

When trying to download the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad package ("GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack" in the Software Center), the package is unable to be downloaded. This problem occurs in the Software Center, Synaptic, and when attempting to install through the terminal. Each time, the program sits for a long time attempting to download the package, but eventually times out.

Switching mirror servers in Software Sources (and running 'sudo apt-get update' afterwards) has not solved the problem. The Software Center and Synaptic have had no trouble downloading and installing any other packages.

Thank you for responding, it will help our team to determine how to approach your bug. Unfortunately, I am unsure whether the issue is being caused by the server that the Software Center and Synaptic are trying to download from, or if it is a problem with the Software Center program itself. Could you please confirm for me whether the Software Center is able to successfully install other packages?

Hi ,

Yes I can install other packages from the Software Center and
via Synaptic .Sometimes the download is quite slow , but most
of the time there is no problem at all .

I should have said earlier that I am using Ubuntu 9.10 , with a
mobile broadband connection .

I am also an absolute beginner with Ubuntu , having just switched
from Windows a few days ago . I was sick-and-tired of the security
issues with Windows . So I am trying to install all the programs
that I generally use .

PAX , John.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I would just like to take a moment to say "Welcome to the Ubuntu community!"

As for your bug, I think we are looking at a problem with the mirror server that your computer is attempting to download from. Could you please go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources. Once the window opens up, you should find the "Ubuntu Software" tab selected. One of the options is a drop-down menu next to "Download from:" If you click on that drop-down menu, you will find the option of "Other..." Could you please select "Other..." and choose a different server that is located relatively close to your location? Afterwards, you can close that window. You should then open a terminal and run 'sudo apt-get update' (without the quotation marks) so your computer will get the information it needs from those servers. After that, could you try once more to download the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad package? Hopefully the download will be successful. If it is, then you can either choose to return the Software Sources settings to their default, or you can leave them changed, it doesn't matter. If it does not work, then please try one or two more servers, just in case you happened to choose the server your computer was already trying to download from.

After you have tried the above solution, please leave a comment letting us know whether or not it worked so we know if we can close this report or if we must investigate it further.

Thank you and good luck!

Sorry to take so long in replying to you , I was at church

And also thank you for your welcome to the 'Ubuntu Community'.

Unfortunately the solution you asked me to try did not work . I tried
to download from 3 other servers and the response was always the
same , the download stops at 5% .

Thank you for trying the possible solution, and sorry it did not work. Unfortunately, we currently do not have enough information to officially confirm your bug since there do not seem to be any other reports of others experiencing the same issue. If you could please clarify a few more questions for me, we will hopefully be able to find a solution for you, or at the very least get this report filed to the right developers.

1. Did you run the 'sudo apt-get update' command each time you switched servers?

2. After switching servers, did you try installing the package in the Software Center as well as Synaptic?

3. Have you tried installing from the terminal? ('sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad')

4. I am not able to find a "gstreamer0.10 plugins bad" in the Software Center. Could you please type the exact title of the package you are attempting to install using the Software Center?

I'm sorry that you have encountered a problem such as this so early in your transition to Ubuntu, but we appreciate your willingness to respond and help resolve the issue.

John, I'm sorry this is taking so long to resolve. I have a few more questions for you so we can hopefully figure out the exact cause of the problem.

1. Are you using a high-speed internet connection?

2. Are you using any kind of proxy for your internet?

3. Have you recently run the Update Manager or 'sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' so your software is up-to-date? (If not, then please do this first)

4. What servers did you try to download from before?

I also have another possible solution you can try:

If you go into the Software Center, then Edit -> Software Sources..., you should get the same menu I had you pull up before. Could you select "Other..." under "Download from:," but this time run "Select Best Server" if you didn't before? This will cause your computer to try every server and select the one with the best speeds (it might take a while if your internet is slow). Then, you can try downloading the package again. If that still doesn't work, then could you please try the "astromirror.uchicago.edu" server under "United States"? Depending on your location, this may cause slow downloads, but I have tried this server personally and it has worked for me.

I know this is similar to what I had you try before, but the problem seems to be with your network connection as opposed to a software issue with either Software Center, Synaptic, or even the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad package. By trying this possible solution and answering my questions, we will have a better idea of whether or not the problem is with the servers or with your computer (or still potentially something else).

Again, I apologize for all of this inconvenience. I will continue to consult with other members of the BugSquad team so we can hopefully find a solution for you soon, or at the very least get your bug heard.

Thanks

Binary package hint: gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

When trying to download the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad package ("GStreamerplugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack" in the Software Center), the package is unable to be downloaded. This problem occurs in the Software Center, Synaptic, and when attempting to install through the terminal. Each time, the program sits for a long time attempting to download the package, but eventually times out.

John, that's great to hear! Sorry it took so long to find such a simple solution, but at least now we know that this could be a possible issue with others. Unfortunately, we're only able to file bug reports related to packages, so I'm going to be closing this report by marking it "invalid."

If you ever have anymore trouble, please feel free to let us know by filing another report.

I hope the rest of your experiences with Ubuntu are smoother. Once again, welcome to the community, and have fun learning about your new OS!
