Bug Description

Binary package hint: hal

Resuming from hibernation, I'm getting this notification "HAL failed to hibernate".
I must add, there is absolutely NO problem with hibernating, I don't even remember when I last saw the ubuntu boot sequence, resume is just perfect.

Can you please do a full hal debug output as described on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices (second half) and attach the log here? Please leave it running while suspending and resuming.

Will do as soon as I come back from where I'm heading to in 2 hours :)
Meaning, about middle of september.

As promised, here the full debug output of hal.

Note 1: that as the last thing I unplugged the laptop from AC (and maybe even plugged it in).

Note 2: I've been playing videos draining the full battery while traveling, so there might be warnings about that and low battery.

Let me know if I can help anything else (maybe do this again while AC always plugged in or so)

I've seen bug reports about the same issue, but attached to other packages. Thus setting to confirmed, but not marking as duplicate because I don't find those bug reports right now.

I too, along with many other Ubuntu users who have decided to use the Ubuntu forums to share this error, have this problem. The error seems to be benign, but I am getting the feeling that it is far more serious than what some assume it to be.

As a matter of fact, it should probably be labled "critical," because any error facing HAL should probably be thoroughly checked out.

In the Ubuntu bug report, gnome-power-manager checks the result of calling hal's
Hibernate function which reports failure for that user. It does not seem to have
an obvious ill effect, however, the debug log [1] shows some errors between
hibernate and resume.

Hibernation process seems to start at 00:30:43.687. Then I see

21:12:56.363 [E] hald_runner.c:320: Malformed or unexpected reply message

I also see some 'Permission denied: Rescan: not privileged' and 'probe-input.c:181: Error: EVIOCGID failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
' messages, but they might be unrelated, since they happen before as well.

By the way, we could think of rephrasing this error message in general: for now, you're likely to understand it as "the particular component HAL is blocking the hibernation". Indeed, as it is HAL that manages the hibernation, we'd better say: "The system could not hibernate. See the help or more info on common issues." (and, too, standard help doesn't speak about this). ;-)

I can confirm.
Every time I boot up from from hibernate I get HAL message.
I'm on 7.10 Gutsy now.

Is this problem still there?

I asked the original reporters to test the current git snapshot packages on the Ubuntu development release. A week ago it was confirmed to still apply to Ubuntu 7.10 (with hal 0.5.9.1). I'll report back here if there is some reply to the Ubuntu bug.

Could you please test current hardy with my test packages in my PPA? https://launchpad.net/~pitti/+archive

Do you still get the problem with those?

It will be difficult right now. I'm on Gutsy... May be a bit later if
I manage to set up testing Hardy installation on separate hdd. OK?

Hello
I have the same error with 8.04.1 and latest upgrade installed.

the ather one is I can not wakeup from screensaver.
the only way is to reset or uplug the hardware - not a good idea.
or set the 2 options in preferance de engerie to hiberne.
afther this i can only goto to hibernation to push the power-key
on the keyboard or on the computer-case, then it goes to hiberation.
with the power key on the case i can reboot. Now it cames up from hibernation normaly.
and I have the same image displayed.
I have a core 2 quadro cpu installed.
An other core 2 duo cpu there is nor probleme.
I make the hardware-summary as attachment.

Closing. This is stale, and irrelevant in the devkit-power world anyway.
