In fact its happens every time you start totem, either on firefox or directly on totem.

I update the bug report

I can confirm this on a fresh install of Lucid beta1, everything is fine on a Karmic -> Lucid beta1 upgraded system. Both are 64bit installs.

I do not have the sound muted problem with the normal desktop Totem ("Movie Player"), but every time I open a file with the totem-mozilla plugin, the sound is muted. Changing the volume in the plugin, closing it, and starting it again has the volume re-muted.

The install of Lucid I have is from Alpha 2 and I am using the 64 bit version.

This issue has been occurring since I installed Lucid, even through updates.

Standalone totem = sound at startup, totem through firefox = muted at startup here as well.

Found a work around that works for me and my browser problem with Firefox and Chromium:

gconftool --type int --set /apps/totem/volume 100

Hope it will help other than me!

BanjoBoy, with your work around volume is always maximal. Better as no sound at all, but can't the setting be saved?

Can confirm this bug on fresh 10.04 install and on an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04.

I just compared my Lucid and Karmic installs and found that Lucid by default does not have the "/apps/totem/volume" key.

Karmic does have the volume key, and in my case, it was set to 100. I'm not sure if it defaulted to 100 or it was 100 because I set it through totem or the totem plugin.

No - it's NOT 100% of the maximum output, but it's 100% of your current volume, i.e. I use 20% of the maximum output as my volume and the above setting will then set it to this volume. If you want it lower then change the 100 in the above command line to the percent you want.

BanjoBoy's workaround does the trick until a fix is released. This is definitely an annoyance that newbie users would get tired of fast.

I was able to reproduce the bug following the test case with the lucid version of the package. After installed the proposed one and followed the test case the bug is not there, the volume is set to the previous used value, the bug is fixed with the proposed package. Marking this as verification done, thanks all.
