Bug Description

When running dapper flight-2 amd64 on this new Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo P I don't get any normal sound, only xmms with OSS output works.

/etc/init.d/alsa reload gives this output:

Does the driver work properly _before_ you run "/etc/init.d/alsa reload"?

Either way, this is a driver problem, not a problem in one of the alsa-driver packages. This should be reassigned to the kernel maintainers.

No, we didn't have any alsa-based sound at any time.

The latest reply indicates that the ac97_codec and i810_audio OSS/Free drivers are loaded, which conflict with their ALSA counterparts, snd-ac97-codec and snd-intel8x0, respectively. You also have snd-intel8x0m loaded, which seems to drive your modem. For testing purposes, please blacklist all of ac97_codec, i810_audio, and snd-intel8x0m if you're not using current (as in dist-upgraded this evening) Dapper and report results. Please also ensure that [linux-image] 2.6.15-14.19 is being used.

It does not work on amd64 2.6.15-14.19. This seems to be the relevant
error mesasge when alsa stuff fails to load:

[ 1199.051690] Intel ICH: probe of 0000:00:02.7 failed with error -5

Is the issue still reproducible on Flight 5 or later?

Changed in alsa-driver:

status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

I don't know, and I can't test. The hardware is in production use by now.

Hello!

I have the same problems with a Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo P2500 (afaik the same as the old X102). The funny thing: These PCs are sold as Linux-PCs... LOL

As far as i read in various newsgroups this is a common problem with these SIS chipsets/soundcard, they are not 100% compatible with intel specs.

Here are my detailed specs, logs and so on:

device:
0000:00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)

while loading the snd_intel8x0 module (manually):

I use Dapper with the latest updates.
I tried to boot the pc with a breezy-live CD -> same problems as in dapper.

ok, i got the same PC for 1 hour back. i installed the latest ubuntu dapper release (incl. all updates). AND i the soundcard works now!

BUT:
i didnt heard any sound...
i had to turn on the "duplicat" switch in alsaconfig. AND i cant adjust the volume with the "master"-volume. i have to use PCM to adjust the sound.

So, now i have to give this PC back to its owner... :(

I have the same problem. Master volume doesn't work, only PCM and Headphone (but it slows very quickly and after 1/4 from the top it has no effects... no volume at all).

Please tell me the solution :-)
