Icon folder browser doesn't show icons even as list

Bug Description

Choosing an icon eg: for a launcher via 'browse' opens a 2 pane 'Browse' window. This browser is fine for getting to the folder you want, if you know whats in that folder, but it only shows sub-folders not icons in the folder. As you double-click down through the folders, and finally double-click on a folder containing only icons it appears to be empty. Once you understand this behaviour, you know to click 'Open' on any folder that *might* contain icons, so that it opens the separate, single pane 'Browse Icons' window, and shows whether there are any icons there or not. Seems to me there are two problems with this:-

1. It is counter-intuitive, especially for newer users - you can easily assume that a folder is empty when it is really stuffed full of icons.

2. It just makes finding the right icon so much harder that it already is (because there are so many different folders to search).

This is not just counterintuitive. It is inconsistent with the way the same Gnome file dialogue works when called from other applications. For instance when I choose File-->Open in Abiword I will see a list of the files (or a subset thereof) in each folder I look at.

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Am not able to reproduce this on my Feisty, which itself is not new by any means.

Can you please try with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron? You can get it here. http://www.ubuntu.com/testing

Thanks in advance.

Still present in 7.10 (right click on panel, "Add to panel...", "Custom Application Launcher", "No Icon", "Browse"). Couldn't try in Hardy Heron yet.

Yes, John said so in the comment before and I still see this issue too.

could you make a screenshot of the issue? the previous comment were about gnome-panel and not nautilus apparently, are you sure you really have the issue using nautilus?

Nautilus was added by InsClusoe as affected package. I don't know what part of the system is responsible for the icon chooser, but the bug itself hasn't changed at all. The original report still applies 100%.

ok, your issue is bug #116443 then and not a nautilus one

Sebastian, when I first reported this bug I mentioned the version of Nautilus that my system had at that time, but I was not saying that Nautilus was the package. I did not know the package involved.
The issue arose when trying to assign an icon to a launcher in the panel. bug #116443 does seem to be the same as this.
I still have this bug in 8.04LTS Hardy.
