I'm also affected by this, just got the crash, a friend is having a crazy nick name which causes the issue.

I get this message whenever I receive a new message in Empathy client on a MSN account while conversing with a contact that has chinese characters in his username. I suspect the chinese characters are causing the error with the unicode thing.

Not is this. All incoming messages suffer from this bug. But it appears the only error indication, the message is received normally.
