Bug Description

Gnome Control Center should be included in the System section in the Unity Applications Place. Likewise for other utilities provided by Gnome such as gnome-display-properties et al.

I am working with mvo on this because we need some hooks from the software-center index for this to work smoothly

Here are some examples of missing apps:

System section: gnome-control-center and gnome-appearance-properties

Any app with .desktop files installed outside /usr/share/applications (which is normally picked up via XDG_DATA_DIRS)

So; the deal is that Ubuntu's software-center blacklists some of the standard gnome utils that it doesn't make sense to regard as components you can browse in a software store. Makes sense. However, unity-place-files needs to be able to find these apps in a way that integrates with our normal Xapian queries to the S-C index.

I talked to MVO at some point about this and he was open to the idea of adding these blacklisted apps to the index in some way.

I can't find Gnome Terminal, does Software Center really blacklist that?

yes if you could add an terminal icon in bar at left it would be easyer to report bugs

I don't mind putting Gnome Terminal in the launcher by default during
the development cycle, it should be dropped for beta or RC.

Hmmm, right, Gnome Terminal shows up in S-C, but not in Unity. So there are probably two different issues at play here.

I fixed one half of the problem in trunk now. The part with missing Gnome Terminal.

The problem was that gnome-terminal.desktop has OnlyShowIn=gnome set.

In order for g_app_info_should_show () to return the correct value we need to call g_desktop_app_info_set_desktop_env ("GNOME") on daemon startup.

Ritz: Yeah - there are a few planets that still needs to align for that to happen:

 1) Proper "Recent Apps" tracking only landed last week - so the Zeitgeist log still needs to be populated with your recent apps

 2) Right now we'll only send log data to Zeitgeist when you launch and app from the launcher - not when you launch from the apps place. This is a bug of course, which I hope to fix this week.
