Bug Description

I am using the latest Edgy. If I get in the url bar using the ctrl + l and hit ctrl + backspace the text does not get deleted. Only the cursor gets to the first position of the selected text. The same applies for whole firefox not only the url bar.

Thanks for your bug report. Do you possibly use any third-party extensions? I cannot reproduce your problem on my Edgy install - when I press ctrl+backspace it deletes the whole address in the URL bar.

After a fruitful discussion on IRC, we came up with the following observations:

Firefox behaviour after pressing ctrl+backspace is different from what you see in other GNOME applications. Here are the differences:

1. If you select some text from left to right and press ctrl+backspace, it should remove the parts of the string word by word. Firefox does something different - it removes all the highlighted words, except the last one, so: 'one two three' becomes: 'three'.

2. If you select some text from right to left and press ctrl+backspace, it should remove everything before the selection, word by word. Firefox removes the highlighted word and the one before it, so 'one two three' with 'three' selected becomes: 'one '

Please also keep in mind that in GNOME, words can be separated not only with white-space characters, but also with '/' and possibly some more characters.

I think that we should try make Firefox as much GNOME-compliant as possible, but I'm don't know if the ctrl+bs behaviour is defined in GTK, GNOME or Ubuntu itself, so I refrained from forwarding this bug upstream.

Vladimír Lapáček:

enter in FF urlbar: about:config

Then enter in search bar: urlbar

set: browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll to true.

From now on, when enter urlbar with CTRL+l it will highlight the whole address and you can just type the new one, it will immediately overwrite the old one.

No need to delete any address anymore. ;)

Hi, your original report was against the edgy distribution. I was
wondering if you are still experiencing this issue. edgy support is
being end-of-lifed.

FWIW, my hardy Firefox behaves the way you seem to suggest.
