Attaching USB mass storage device fails with device descriptor read/64, error -71

Bug Description

When attaching my Apple IPod I get the following errors in /var/log/kern.log:

The problem can be solved this way:
$ sudo su -
$ echo Y > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/old_scheme_first

It was easy for me to fix the problem, but for the average user Joe, this would probably cause major headaches.
