Bug Description

Due to understandably swamped MOTU Media folks, x264 has not been updated for a while. It is still very much an in-development project, with constant and significant improvements even in short frames of time.

debian-marillat has 20060928 from svn. I have pbuilder'ed and tested this in Edgy, including rebuilding mplayer and avidemux (the only two that build against x264-dev) against it. Mplayer works great, but avidemux doesn't build. I'm looking into what needs to be done. I see faster encode speeds, and better quality even on turbo settings. Since apps get statically linked against avidemux, it's not the end of the world, and I'd personally say the benefit still current outweighs the setback.

This is definitely very worthwhile to get into Edgy, and it's just a shame it didn't happen earlier.

I will post changelogs and the other necessary information.

I think this was good research including investigation of reverse build depends. From the report I see here, I tend to agree.

Slomo and Nafallo know better about the current status in mplayer, if they have no objections to this I'd say, lets get that in! (along with the patch for avidemux, that is).

Also marked mplayer as affected. Needs a rebuild -- no source changes necessary.
