gnome accessibility: Messes up keyboard

Bug Description

When shift is held down for a few seconds and the irritating dialog pops up, it hinders ctrl and shift from being used while it is shown.
I happened to move away the dialog and continued with my work, but ctrl and shift was unusable. When closing the dialog, everything was fine again. No dialog on earth should be this evil.

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu do you use?

I see the same thing on Edgy (near RC). It's the slow keys dialog that does it. I have sticky keys enabled and when I open Gedit after this dialog pops up I am not able to type into it before it's closed.

I agree that these dialogs are generally bad and need to be redesigned. I'll spec it up for Edgy+1.

Since some of my bugs were marked as a duplicate of this one, I'll enumerate the distinct problems described in those bugs:

There's no way to disable the "shortcut" methods for enabling these features without disabling all accessibility features (such as automatically repeating keys when they're held down, a basic feature of every keyboard I've ever used)

The discoverability of the shortcuts is very low (I don't know of anyone who would think "How can I make it so my keys don't activate for 3/10 seconds after they're pressed...I know, I'll hold down shift for awhile, that'll probably do it!")

Once the dialog "pops up" (see bug #31720), the feature it describes is already active. This means that the buttons on the dialog in question ("don't activate" and "activate") do not describe what they do ("deactivate" and "don't deactivate" respectively)

Henrik, any news on the spec for this?

The dialog no longer pops up for me when holding shift down in intrepid. Closing (please reopen if you can still reproduce it).
