Bug Description

For gstreamer0.8, there is a meta-package called gstreamer0.8-plugins. This "package will ensure that all GStreamer plugins are installed". This is missing in gstreamer0.10.

Also, there should be a meta-package that will install all plugins regardless of the version of gstreamer currently running.

It should be created in the same way as with the linux kernel, where there are two levels of metapackages.

EXAMPLE (using kernel; mp=metapackage):
linux-386 (mp) : installs newest linux-image-386 (mp).
linux-image-386 (mp) : installs newest 386 kernel package

EXAMPLE (using gstreamer : assuming newest is 0.10):
gstreamer-plugins (mp) : installs gstreamer0.10-plugins (mp)
gstreamer0.10-plugins (mp) : installs all 0.10 plugins

When gstreamer0.12 is out, gstreamer-plugins would install gstreamer0.12-plugins, etc.

Thanks for your bug. That package was useful for gstreamer0.8 because it was splitted to a lot of binary packages. gstreamer0.10 plugins are splitted only in a few packages and the required ones are installed with the desktop. extra plugins are not complicated to install and gnome-app-install has a special item for that. Marking the request as rejected, that's not something we want to spend efforts on

Changed in gstreamer0.10:
assignee: nobody → desktop-bugs
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected
