[KDE 3.5.5] Device labels are not correctly displayed on desktop

Bug Description

With KDE 3.5.4, the mounted devices were shown on the desktop using their label, but now with KDE 3.5.5 they are shown using the name of the device. The same happens in media:/. For example, if you inserted a CD labeled "My CD", it showed a CD-ROM icon on the desktop named "My CD", but now it shows a CD-ROM icon named "cdrom0".

I suppose that this is related to the media:/->/media change done in Kubuntu Edgy, but this is tested on Dapper!

This bug may be related to bug #66110

I have this problem, too.

It's really sad... I was quite impressed when I installed Dapper (KDE 3.5.4, I think) and put a DVD in the drive. The DVD icon popped up (*not* the CD icon, like it does now), and the icon's label was "BATMAN_BEGINS", not "cdrom0".

I can confirm this bug, but only for desktop icons.
In media:/ view, the media names are shown correctly.
I use Dapper w/ KDE 3.5.5 all up to date.

Additionally I have problems which might be connected to this: My media icons sometimes don't show up immediately on desktop, just when refreshing desktop or hovering the mouse over the place where the icon should be. Then it appears magically. And when refreshing the desktop, the icon for USB devices doesn't have the action "remove safely" anymore. Again, on media:/ view it works fine.

After applying the workaround that I posted in bug #65662 (changing /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf), USB sticks started showing up with correct labels, and "Safely Remove" is an option.

CDs still show up as "cdrom0", but now there's an "Eject" option, at least!

Hang on... the only reason that my USB stick shows up as "STORE'N'GO" is that the mount point is now /media/STORE'N'GO (instead of /media/usb or whatever it used to be).

Sincerely, I just can't understand why media:/ is being changed to /media in Kubuntu. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuKDEMedia

Wouldn't it be better if all worked using the media:/ location like it was doing in 3.5.4, but, in order to get the real location on the location bar, only one thing should be changed: when clicking on a device in media:/ or in the desktop, it should open the real location (for example, if "My CD-ROM" appeared on media:/, when clicking it should open /media/cdrom0 instead of media:/cdrom).

Or at least, keep the media:/ system until the patch works exactly like it, and correctly.

This works for me in both Dapper and Feisty, but not Edgy.

Dapper: "The CD Label"
Edgy: no icon on desktop at all
Feisty: "The CD Label (cdrom0)"

This isn't an issue with the new device notifier/lister (Device Notifier plasma applet) in Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex. (8.10)
Thanks for your bug report as well as your interest in supporting Kubuntu!
