VNC much slower with kubuntu client than with vncserver

Bug Description

On Kubuntu 6.06, enabling "Desktop Sharing" and connecting to it from a WindosXP box on the local LAN is slow to the point of being unusable. installing and running the standard vncserver package instead runs perfecly well (with no other modifications to the setup, client, or LAN). It's a shame the built-in solution doesn't work well and requires this additional installation, since the functionality is supposed to be exactly the same using any VNC server.
btw I've found this issue reported in various external forum websites, none with a solution or any insight other than installing an alternative VNC server to the built-in one...

Thanks. Have you tried this under Edgy - is it still very slow?

Yes, I've upgraded to Edgy final and it's still the same...

btw I just noticed that running top shows the two processes 'Xorg' and 'krfb' taking up 50% CPU each, which means no CPU time is left for actually getting any work done!

This sounds an awful lot like a problem I had with a VNC server a long time ago, on Windows. After a lot of frustration it turned out to be a configuration issue. The VNC server was polling too zealously - constantly polling the entire desktop, instead of a more effecient strategy like polling the area under the cursor and a small surrounding area, and polling the rest of the desktop only periodically. All this polling was a real drag on CPU resources, and a pretty easy configuration change fixed it. I haven't used VNC in a long time, so I don't have any more specific advice off the top of my head, but hopefully this info will be useful.

I turned the desktop sharing on via the GUI, which is basically a checkbox - not much room for tinkering with configuration. If anyone knows where those options are found and which should be modified, I'd be happy to test it.

Is this still an issue? I haven't experienced this issue and use VNC/RDP to connect to my desktops while I am at school with both Windows XP and SLED 10.2.
