gdmgreeter hangs

Binary package hint: gdm

Hi,

on one of my ubuntu machines it sometimes happens that the login procedure hangs after entering the password. strace shows that gdmgreeter is stuck in a poll loop. Occured on both dapper and now on edgy.

It seems as if the usage of pam_tmpdir

/etc/pam.d/common-session:
session optional pam_tmpdir.so

had caused the problem. After removing that logging in worked three times.

Some incompatibility between gdm and libpam?

To me this looks like a problem of: pool/universe/p/pam-tmpdir, no?

A very similar issue has been fixed in libpam-tmpdir version 0.07-1 (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=355205 and http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=332466 for a possible duplicate). Does this problem still occur with that version of libpam-tmpdir in Ubuntu? libpam-tmpdir 0.07-1 is available in Ubuntu starting from Feisty.

Actually, I did not see the problem on two freshly installed 8.04 machines.
