Trash icon in gnome panel always displays empty state

Bug Description

The icon in the gnome panel showing the state of the trash reports always "empty". Even the right-click menu acts wrongly and doesn't display the "Empty Trash" option.

Steps to reproduce:

Move something to the trash.
Look at your panel

I have the exact same issue.

I think there may be a permissions problem or some other such issue
but I'm sure that's of no help.
