Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

In gnome-screensaver-preferences I set the screensaver to start after 6 minutes.
In gnome-power-preferences I set the display to sleep after 20 minutes.

Everything is normal at first:
- after 6 minutes, screensaver starts.
- after 20 minutes, display sleeps.

After that, I move the mouse or press a key. Display comes back.

But after 6 minutes (if I do nothing),screensaver doesn't start, display directly sleeps.

If I press Ctrl-Alt-L, I get the same behaviour.

Using Edgy.

EDIT:
Actually I can't reproduce this behaviour anymore. Maybe there are other things that I forgot and that cause this behaviour to happen. If or when I find out I will post a new comment. Till then forget about this bug report.

I can confirm this behaviour on Edgy. It happens on an upgraded install on a PC and on a clean install on a mac.

If the display is never allowed to sleep then the screensaver starts up exactly as you'd expect (on timeout and on ctrl-alt-l). Once the screen has been allowed to sleep the screensaver no longer activates.

The bizarre thing is that _sometimes_ the screensaver will work after a screen sleep, but not often!

The only way t restore normal behaviour is a reboot. Logout or restart X don't affect it.

Update:

When I said the screensaver doesn't start, I mean that the theme doesn't start, ie you get a blank screen.

Also, I just found that logging out and in does (sometimes) return normal behaviour...

I tried to test this bug with clean profile. I created new user profile but it didn't help, so the reason should be somewhere in system wide files incorrectly upgraded.

I also tried this on a clean installation (ppc) but I DO get the fault,
just the same as my upgraded PC

This behaviour is happening again to me: start the computer, do nothing but wait, screensaver activates, wait and screen gets blank, move the mouse or press a key, desktop comes back (OK so far - you can do some activities, I ran Firefox but that's certainly not the cause) and:
- wait again, when the screensaver should activate again screen gets blank instead.
OR
- press Ctrl-Alt-L: screensaver should activate again but screen gets blank instead.

I use a CLEAN installation of Edgy on my computer (upgrade from Dapper failed for me for some reasons so I did a clean installation).

I also noticed some non-GL screensavers appears OK—at least they were the only ones I saw activated.

Maybe something wrong with OpenGL related stuff? It's weird, because I have different video cards (thus video drivers)—office one has built-in i810 and home PC has nvidia installed.

I also encountered this bug. I ran gnome-screensaver --nodaemon --debug for a long time, and noticed that when the screensaver wasn't working correctly, the debug output includes lines like

[manager_maybe_start_job_for_window] gs-manager.c:207 (21:33:38): Not starting job because throttled

Prior to that, the throttle is being toggled on and off for a while, but it seems to get stuck for some reason.

If I restart gnome-screensaver with

$ killall gnome-screensaver; gnome-screensaver

then things start working again.

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release?

Thanks in advance.
