which linux kernel are you using? there are many flavors of OMAP4 kernel out there, and not all of them have identical content...e.g. if your kernel is based on a recent plain upstream, you might not have the proper display driver for example.

This will be with the Linaro "mainline" kernel, which is nearly identical to
plain upstream 2.6.37, yes.

@steve, thanks. so then yes I confirmed that it is 'normal'. there is no HDMI support in mainline. I believe there are patches in current mainline (.38-rc) + a couple of pending patch series that enable DVI output on the pandaboard. but that requires you have access to production pandaboard (DVI was not functional for any before A1 board).

I'd say that, as far as ARM/OMAP is concerned, this might be more like
2.6.38-rc1. Any missing pieces are welcome though.

Tom has confirmed that neither the headless or ALIP images output gfx which is consistant with the comments above.

@Nicolas, is there somewhere that we can get a list of patches that are needed on top of 2.6.38-rc to enable dvi on Panda?

summary: - panda: no gfx with ALIP image
+ panda: no gfx due to missing kernel functionality

I've compiled the patches needed to enable DVI support - from 6 different series submitted to the relevant trees so far. They are available against the linaro-2.6.37 kernel tree here:

git://dev.omapzoom.org/pub/scm/anand/linux-omap-usb.git display-patches-for-linaro-37

and against v2.6.38-rc4 here:

git://dev.omapzoom.org/pub/scm/anand/linux-omap-usb.git display-patches-for-v2.6.38-rc4

Except for the last patch (which is yet to be posted to linux-omap), the individual series for the rest are here (I've linked to only the first patch in each series):
1.
v10 of OMAP2,3 DSS2 HWMOD
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/500191/

2.
v3 of DSS2: Generalize clock names
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/520191/

3.
v3 of DSS2: OMAP4 DSS HWMOD :
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/511211/

4.
OMAP: DSS2: Common IRQ handler for all OMAPs
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/526241/

5.
OMAP4: DSS2: Adding fclk support for DPI interface
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/529381/

6.
OMAP: DSS2: Adding dss_features for independent core clk divider
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/529561/

I'll send a pull request for the linaro 2.6.37 tree in a while
