Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

This is sporadic - A clutzy workaround that I found is to always click 'Settings' first which does bring up the password dialog. However I deliberately avoided the workaround so as to send the bug report with system info when it is actually happening.

Very inconvenient and discouraging for Linux newbie.

I'm having trouble following your description. You open update-manager from the menu, and instead of clicking settings, you do what exactly?

Sorry to abbreviate.

 1. Normally Update Manager has 'automatically started' on its own -
I'm Not starting it manually from the menu.

 2. As one might expect from a normal newbie - I click "Install
Updates"

 3. Not much happens, except the spinning wheel icon.

 4. No password dialog displays - see number 3 above.

=====================

What I discovered was a workaround which involved clicking Settings
first, and then closing them, before clicking "Install Updates"

but this is non-obvious and inconvenient.

The other behavior (described above in the numbered steps) is useless
and frustrating.

Just to make sure; it does not even ask for the password? There was another bug where it would ask, but then not proceed when you entered it.
