Bug Description

To reproduce, use Gwibber to post to Facebook. You should see the following message in the console:

(gwibber:16419): LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-DEBUG: Could not handle image type 6

Binary package hint: gedit

I received a lot of these warnings on the console after upgrading to Xubuntu Natty.

gedit doesn't use the indicator stack directly so it's likely due to the indicator stack

affects: gedit (Ubuntu) → libdbusmenu (Ubuntu)

I just saw this while running gwibber from a terminal:

(gwibber:8561): LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-DEBUG: Could not handle image type 6

So re-opening

libdbusmenu-gtk3 = 0.3.102-0ubuntu1

Gwibber will not post to Facebook, so I opened it in terminal to debug. Every attempt to post to Facebook gives this exact message:

(gwibber:16419): LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-DEBUG: Could not handle image type 6

Natty AMD64

Now you're talking about a separate bug from the original one. The original one was about missing support for type 0 (empty or no image). That warning has been supressed as noted.

This new complaint is about image type 6, GTK_IMAGE_ANIMATION. It's true that dbusmenu doesn't currently handle this. I'll retool the description of the bug.

summary: - LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-DEBUG: Could not handle image type 0
+ Missing support for animated menu icons: "Could not handle image type 6"
description: updated

I don't know how important it is, but it's rendered the Facebook portion of Gwibber completely useless. The thing is, I guess nobody uses Gwibber, so I can't find ANYONE that cares about it.

The same thing currently happens when attempting to post to ping.fm.

I'm seeing the same error, accompanied by a complete failure to download notices from Twitter. The Twitter stream simply shows completely empty. Is this related? Is there any workaround?

My error has gone away after a while. Perhaps one of the people I'm following is using an animated image for their avatar, and they haven't posted anything recently. If so, I assume it'll come back before too long. Is there any way to track down what's triggering this error, i.e. where the image in question is coming from?

It's just happened again. By switching to another client, I'm able to deduce that the next tweet in the stream would have been http://twitter.com/#!/maxogden/status/77668660868677632 which contains a link to an animated GIF. Perhaps, it's trying to display that image inline and choking on it? But why would this be passed to dbusmenu anyway?

The dbusmenu error itself seems harmless; update_icon() should just do nothing. So maybe there is actually a separate Gwibber bug here?
