Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

When I choose in the menu, lock user and start new session.

Then I log out of the new session to return to the previous, I sometimes just get a black screen.

Then I have to power off and power on.

Sometimes I'm just out of X, and then I press F7 and I'm back to the previous login.

Which release of Kubuntu are you running? Additionally what version of kdm are you using?

Also, what video driver are you using?

I can reproduce this on a Herd 4 system. When Iog out, it doesn't take me to KDM, but rather takes me to a black screen. Sometimes, a bit of the shut down menu will display (but it will never shut down). Ctrl + Alt + Backspace doesn't work, neither does trying to get to a TTY.

KDM -- Installed: 4:3.5.6-0ubuntu9
nv is my video driver.

Is this still an issue for anybody with the Feisty Fawn Beta? Thanks again.

Works fine for me on an up to date Feisty install.

The laptop in question uses the old ATI Rage Mobilty Pro video card and I am using Free drivers.

However switching back to the original session I got the black screen. F7 got me back to the session.

I have the latest version of Feisty Fawn with Kubuntu (kde 3.5.6, qt 3.3.7) and I get no switch menu at all i.e. start menu has no start new session option. Lock user gives me no option to start new session either.

My wife and I have to log one another out before starting a new session. Just like windoze.

I've had the same, or a very simliar problem with Edgy and now with Feisty as well.

When logging out the second user (after having done a Switch User), the display doesn't return to the first user's instance of X.

It seems that the second user/ X server is always started on vc9. When logging this user out, the display goes to vc8, which has nothing running in it, so I'm looking at a blank screen with a blinking cursor and I have to manually (CTRL-ALT-F7) switch back to vc7.

I experience the same problem if I initiate a Remote Login (XDMCP) from the kdm login screen. After logging out the remote connection, I am not returned to the X server on vc7 where kdm is running.

I have found a workaround for this problem.

First, I have verified the following through experimentation:
-I cannot get kdm to start on vc/tty8, period. This I do not understand, as I have never seen anything running on tty8 (checked with ps aux).
-When logging out a second user, the screen always switches to tty<current>-1, regardless where the first user's X display is running.

Given these facts, my workaround is to make the first/original/primary kdm start on tty9. That means that a second user's display will be started on tty10, and I have verified that logging off the second user returns the screen to the first user's display on tty9, as expected.

To use this workaround, change the file /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc as follows, then restart kdm:

old:
ServerVTs=-7

new:
ServerVTs=-9

On Intrepid, logging out of a session on vt9 takes me back to vt7 without problems, using the nv driver.

Is this report about a "black-screen-with-no-escape" (as some comment seems to suggest) or simply "wrong VT" (fixable with Ctrl-Alt-F7 etc.)? If the latter, please mark bug 93828 as a duplicate.

Yuriy Kozlov (yuriy-kozlov) wrote :

As confirmed by apachelogger, the "wrong VT" bug is fixed in Intrepid. "black-screen-with-no-escape" would probably be a bug in the video driver, and I believe there are some bugs filed against fglrx and others documenting that problem, so I am closing this for kdebase.
