Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Oh, and the traceback suggests it is relevant that I have a package which failed to install sitting in the list-to-install, so that assertion is making invalid assumptions about the original state of the config.

This is a 12.04 that was converted from an 11.10 back in November. It is modified to be my daily working install.

I update it daily. The last update being very early morning on Monday 19th March. The first thing I did when the desktop loaded was to run Update Manager. The message I know get from Update manager is: software index is broken. It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install-f in a terminal to fix this issue at first.

The strange thing is that I also have a default 12.04 Beta 1 install on another partition. I had just booted into that install and updated it without any problems.

It occurs to me that the two 12.04 installs may have different mirrors. The 11.10 converted 12.04 has datahop uk as the server. The default 12.04 will have the server put in place by the install. I will check.
