Binary package hint: xorg

Random screen flickering with nvidia beta 270.30.

I am not sure if its an upstream nvidia bug or xorg related.

I get the same thing using 270.30 and an nvidia 8600 card. It always seems to be is set off by some user-initiated action (eg last time it happened I had just clicked on the checkbox to turn windows previews on in compiz). It is certainly very annoying because you can't do anything until it decides to stop - and it can go on for more than 30 seconds.

There's a thread/bug report started about it at the nvidia forums http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2414323 but nvidia don't seem to be very responsive to bug reports these days.

Fwiw, I haven't seen it happen yet with the 270.41.03 drivers, so perhaps it's fixed in the new drivers.

Odd, I haven't experienced it once since I installed 270.41.03 around a week ago. I would have expected to see it happen several times per week with 270.30.

Same issue here: I am using now PCLinuxOS and I am experiencing the same problem, screen flickers por 5 seconds or so (flashing) and then goes back to normality. By the way It is happening to me since 260.44 (my GPU is a Nvidia 8400GS 512MB RAM)

Yeah, same thing here, with every nvidia proprietary driver. I'm using linux on my desktop for ~10 years and I have never found it as unusable as it is today.

This bug is marked as "incomplete". Is there anything that we can do to help with more information?

Hi, I'm having the same problem as well. Ubuntu 11.04 on amd64, with NVIDIA GT 435M Optimus card, and the problem still persists with 270.41.06 installed. Flickering occurs at odd moments such as changing the screen brightness, or clicking GUI controls. Oddly, using nvidia-settings to change the resolution to some lower resolution and then changing it back seems to completely stop the flickering, for the current session at least.

Hi. I report the exact same problem described by Hubert. I have a Dell L501x with Nvidia 435m. I'm using nvidia-current 275.19-0ubuntu1~natty~xup1 from x-updates.

One fix for this problem is to disable RandR in xorg.conf (Adding Option "RandR" "0"), but this is inconvenient for several reasons. Btw, thanks for the resolution change tip.
