Ok i see the problem.
The applet change the volume for the headphone and not the speaker.
If i open the volume control and change the volume of the speaker it works.
Any idea why the applet is set on the headphone and not the speaker?

maybe something similar to bug #45345?

Yep, it seems to be the same kind of problem.
It would be a gst bug so?

I just tested with a Edgy live and don't have this problem, so it's a regression.

Indeed, I can confirm that this is a regression. Guillaume and I bought the same laptop at the same time, only I installed edgy (I'm less adventurous than Guillaume). The applet works fine for me.

reassigning to gstreamer, gnome-applets didn't change since edgy, Guillaume, do you have your feisty up to date?

What's the output of "amixer --device=default" on that machine?

Ok, there definitely is some kind of bug here... not sure if it's alsa or gstreamer though.

I wonder which volume should've been chosen instead of headphone... PCM? There definitely is something like Master or Front missing here...

Daniel, do you have an idea what one is supposed to do with alsa here?

Sebastian: i set the applet on "Speaker" (not PCM) and it works fine so i suppose we should use this

Well, ALSA (linux-source-2.6.19/alsa-driver) is partly to blame due to the mixer controls' enumeration, but that's not a problem easily resolved without touching -all- drivers.

Guillaume and Nicolas, please attach your respective ``lspci -nv && cat /proc/asound/card0/codec*''.

(As an aside, pulseaudio should alleviate this somewhat, hopefully...)

'cat /proc/asound/card0/codec*' gives me

cat: /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0: est un répertoire

So I did this instead:

'cat /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/*'
