Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

I've got a dualscreen setup. When I open a window (say Firefox), it opens on the primary (upper) screen. I'd like to drag windows down to the secondary screen, but it will not move completely over the boundary of the two screens. The title bar always stays on the primary screen.

thank you for your bug report, does that work in a classic GNOME session? what do you mean the title stay on the primary screen? you get the dialog moved but not the title? can you take a screenshot?

I can move the window as a whole, but when I try to move it on the second screen, it does not move any further than the point where the title is about to leave the first screen.

Just configure a vertical dualscreen setup with the primary screen on the top, and try moving a window from the top to bottom.

I think this is something you can tweak in compizconfig-settings-manager(ccsm) though not sure where.

I have the same dual screen issue, windows get stuck at the bottom. The moved window's title bar is often hidden by the OS's title bar on the bottom display. Icons cant be dragged either - they simply return to where they were. Driving me crazy.

Also strange is the display setup, I have to position the bottom monitor (laptop screen) to the far right of the larger 22" display so the laptop's screen doesn't get truncated on the left hand side.

I just discovered the ALT-drag thing. That will do me for now. I pretty much have a clean install of the x64 narwhal nightly from yesterday. I can give you more system info if you like. I do have a Intel Graphics Accelerator built into the i5 in my vostro 3500 laptop.. Regardless, the OS usability seems to have generally improved since my last install a few years ago. Thanks for all the good work although I'm not totally "stoked" ;P

Can anyone try to resize any window (for example Terminal) on one of the screens, and on another.
I move windows with ALT - I already used to it, but no realy like it, but resizing window makes them disappear (force closed) and this is realy making me furious.

In Classic GNOME session everything works normal, without those problems.

The same here! Resizing a window on the lower monitor makes the window
disappear immediately. It works for windows on the top monitor though.

I don't understand why this has importance "Low". It makes Unity practically unusable for the given dual monitor setup...

Is this issue fixed in oneiric?

Fixing bug 853865 would fix (or at least hide) this problem.

How very odd. In theory this bug would be an issue in the compiz "move" plugin. However I can confirm the bug does not occur in Gnome classic, using the same compiz "move" plugin. Maybe there's something specific to unity that is affecting how far the compiz "move" plugin is willing to move windows?

I just upgraded to oneiric, and the problem has disappeared.

Now Unity does make fun!

Sorry to hear, Aaron. I would have thought two of us verifying the bug was gone would be enough :(

Do you have any non-standard Unity/window management settings that might explain why you still see the bug but others don't?

Aaron Bentley (abentley) wrote :

Daniel, the non-standard setting I have is my launcher icons are 32x32.

In Oneiric, the issue is improved for me, but not completely fixed. For some applications, I can drag them smoothly from the top to the bottom. For others, I must drag them quickly, or their title bar gets stuck at the bottom of the top monitor. In my current session, xchat-gnome tends to get stuck, but firefox is moves freely. I moved xchat-gnome first, so that may be the cause. It's not at all clear to me.

I have the same launcher icon size, but don't think it's relevant to this bug.

Although I found I could drag windows past the panel after upgrading to 11.10, I did notice a little bit of a glitch in that the panel was grabbing the motion events as the mouse pointer dragged over it. But once the pointer reached the other side of the panel the window kept dragging correctly. So that's probably related to the fact this bug is not fully fixed yet.

Please change the bug status back to Confirmed. I don't seem to be able to now that it's Fix Released... Can anyone?
