Bug Description

[Impact]

 * rar format itself supports Unicode filename pretty well

 * However, rar 4.0 beta 3, as included in 12.04 and 12.10, has problems handling unicode filenames. In other words, it cannot correctly handle filenames contain non-ASCII characters.

 * Please refer to user comments also

 * rar 4.2.0, as included in 13.04+, doesn't have such problem

[Test Case]

 * Make sure "rar" package is installed

 * Download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/45139465/test.rar

 * Open test.rar file in File Roller

 * The top folder should be "圣经手机版"

[Regression Potential]

 * None

These filenames use the Windows character set, and Ubuntu now uses UTF-8.

WORKAROUND: Use WinRAR (under wine) to extract these archives - works fine!

Hi there,

Thanks for your comment, but it shows a small misunderstanding. I am not trying to extract files from an archive, I am trying to create an archive using rar. The ubuntu environment indeed uses UTF-8, and rar use to be able to handle these filename quite fine (as I mentioned, on Lucid and Maverick it works well). There is a regression on Natty, and I assume it is related to the updated version of rar [went from 3.90 to 4.00]).

Using Winrar in wine is certainly an option, although I would rather use "native" applications.

Cheers,

I can confirm this bug on natty with rar 4.0b3. I tried to pack some directories with Japanese filenames (created by myself using nautilus, so they should be UTF-8) and all archives had just the complete directory-structure (Japanese names OK) without any files.

I removed rar 4.0b3 and installed rar 3.93 and now it works fine.

very small size ex. 84bytes

rar package in 13.04 is upgraded and this kind of issues should disappear for 13.04 onwards.

For older releases of Ubuntu, remove rar package manually or install rar shareware from official site.

Please use $ requestbackport tool to request backports which will fill out proper testing template on the bug report of all reverse-dependencies (if any) and generate a backport in a PPA as well as highlight if any changes to packaging are required.

Thanks for patches, subscribing ubuntu sponsors.

Ubuntu Sponsors note, since this is a binary/non-free package the diff are against the raring package to pull in updated blobs into quantal/precise.
