Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Edgy, fully updated.
Gnome-panel 2.16.1

Issue: When KDE apps are open (tested; Kopete, Kaffeine, Amarok) and workspace is switched, KDE applications clamour for attention. That is, their 'tab' in the panel flashes orange until I click it. This is a permanent bug and replicated 100% of the time on my Edgy system.

To replicate:

 - Load gnome
 - Open programs, including KDE applications
 - Change to a workspace and then back to the original one with kde application on it

Feel free to request any more information as and when needed, particularly if there is any output from the system that may be relevant (I couldn't think of any so haven't included any).

Thank you for your bug. Does it happen with KDE applications only? What window manager are you using?

I haven't tested every single application, but it has only happened with KDE applications.

I'm using standard GNOME, so my window manager is nautilus.

how do you switch the workspace?

Either by using a key combination, or by clicking in the workspace switcher on my panel. The same thing happens either way I switch workspace. I've also realised that the same thing happens when I minimise all windows by using "show desktop".

That works fine on my feisty desktop with kedit, marking unconfirmed; maybe somebody else is getting that problem and can have a look on it. Could you try with an another user on your configuration if you get the same problme? You are not the only one to use KDE applications under GNOME and there is no other bug about that opened, that's probably trigered by some configuration option you are using

I can confirm this bug in Edubuntu. Most edubutnu apps are KDE based, it is happening on edgy. Not sure about feisty as I havn't tested that yet.

For what it's worth, this isn't limited to Ubuntu. I'm running Gentoo 2006.1 with Gnome, and have been having this exact problem with Amarok ever since I installed it. Perhaps this should be filed as a Gnome or KDE bug?

I can confirm this with Edgy (upgraded from Dapper), and also Fedora Core 6 (I *think* this was upgraded from FC2, although I'm not 100% certain about that, I didn't do the install).

Could it be related to upgrading as opposed to a fresh install? Perhaps some old config setting somewhere which is causing problems?

I created a new user and tested with that, same results. So it would appear to not be a user-specific configuration problem.

Another few minor bits of information:
* If I only have a single KDE app in a workspace, and it is the focused window on the workspace, the flashing doesn't happen.
* Minimised KDE apps don't flash.

I always had that bug. Clean install of Ubuntu Edgy Eft.
Every time I change workspace/desktop and come back, my KDE apps (Kile, KPDF, Kate) are flashing in the Gnome panel. They don't flash if they were minimized.

I often switch from beryl to metacity. If I use beryl as my window manager, the bug doesn't come up, whatever the window decorator is (emerald, heliodor or gtk window decorator). But, when I'm switching from metacity to beryl or from beryl to metacity, the flashing occurs.

This is really annoying me... Hope to see that bug resolved.

Thanx
