Bug Description

My computer is Gateway notebook M 680. Centrino 2GHz, Ram 1GB, HDD 80GB, video GeForce 6800 Go.

I used to have 6.05 and everything was perfect, never had any problems.

The new versions , 6.10 and 7.04, seem to install different driver during installation / live:

1. Under live I see the logo then hear sounds after a while but nothing can be seen on the screen - all dark.
2. After text or OEM install I go successfully through the process and after reboot I see see the logo but the screen never lights - it is all dark. No image or lines of any sort - simply dark and it is impossible to get into the system.
I think that probably the driver of GeForce 6800 Go is messed up.

Thanks for the report,

This is actually a pretty common issue with a lot of video cards ATI & Nividia, in fact I experienced it myself on my laptop with an ATI card.

One option you can try is booting up in recovery mode and modifying your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and where it says:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Your Nvidia Card"
Driver "Nv"

At least I think it is nv, anways change whatever that is to vesa, save it then try to boot up again. This will just get you into the gui but you'll still have to install proprietary drivers. Changing it to vesa actually froze for me... but it works for some. I installed my proprietary drivers through the recovery mode console.

For instructions on how to accomplish this you can refer to:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Latest_Nvidia_Dapper

The page says it's for dapper but I don't really see anything that wouldn't work in Edgy or Feisty. This worked for me, hopefully it will work for you.

Another known issue (again with ATI, sorry) is that it sometimes detects the wrong output and you have to modify your xorg.conf to Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,AUTO"

They are actually the same problem and I'm assuming this is just a duplicate if this common issue. Gonna move this over to needs info, let me know if any of this works for you.

Can you check whether adding
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
(as described in Bug #82312 ) to the Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf makes any difference?
