Bug Description

When I click on a file of a certain name it acts as if it was just deleted or vanished. Take a look at the screen shot. Weird huh? As you can see it is only of a certain type and when I refresh they appear again. So gladly they are not deleted. But quite a problem really.

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu do you use? you seem to use beryl or compiz. Does that happen without beryl or compiz too?

I switch to metacity and it seemed to do the same thing. At least I switched to the manager from the beryl manager. Do you want it on a strait no beryl start?

Do you have that problem if you copy the file to an another directory? Could you attach an example of file triggering that problem to the bug? What version of Ubuntu do you use? Are you sure that's not only the directory which is reordered? Do you have the correct rights to read in that directory? That's possible that nautilus mask the file on clicking because it figures it's not authorized to read it or something like that

Here is one of the files...
Now for your other request let me try that....
When I rightclicked on the file it vanished but the filecoud be opened with the open with menu. I could also copy and paste it to my desktop. From there it didn't vanish. I can see and click on it in the file open window when I press browse to upload it.
I am using edgy.
I have rights to the directory.
Nope it didn't reorder... it looks like it vanished. I can refresh and it sometimes throws it to a random location. At least it feels random as I can't find all files that have vanished.
It doesn't seem to vanish in anything but list view. (Probably resorting, but still a bug ¶: )
If I try to look for the file by typing it in it vanishes as soon as it finds it.
Oh hey, I found a pattern in the place that they are placing.... in my long list... they don't show up at the bottom... they show up third from the bottom and stack from there. WEIRD!
Lets try the copy and view in list from somewhere else... Dang... that is going to take some time as it needs to be a long list to see if it reorders it. I will get back to you on that one... time for school. :)

Does the file vanish if you copy on your desktop and click on it by example? Does it happen with an another folder with not that many item? What mimetype is listed by the nautilus properties dialog on it?

Nope... I checked and it doesn't vanish. I also noticed that it doesn't
move if I am in Icon view. Instead of List View.
> Does it happen with an another folder with not that many item?
I doesn't seem too. I am trying to make it happen in another folder but
can seem to get it to work with fewer files. I suppose I could try more
and more. Would you like me to do that?
> What mimetype is listed by the nautilus properties dialog on it?
audio/x-vorbis+ogg
That is what it gave me....
It looks like all of them are that format. Hmm... a relation.

I also for the heck of it check at different zoom levels and it still
produces the problem. (I wondered 'cause I always read this list at a
smaller icon zoom level.
Happy to help...

could you try to start nautilus from a command line by running "gnome-session-remove nautilus" to stop the running instance and start "nautilus" then and note if anything is printed when you get the bug? Having a simple case to trigger the problem would make easier to debug it

I think this bug is linked to the Nautilus bug I have read on the gnome.org:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336955

First, I would like to describe the way to reproduce (hopefully easy for you guys)
1. Download one of .ogg files from this forum. Duplicate it to 30+ files. Any file name will do.
2. Switch to list view.
3. Order file by type.
4. Close and reopen the folder.
5. Click at the first file. Voila!
6. Repeat step 5 as much as you want.

The result is due to the fact that Nautilus always reorder the item when something changed. The selected file does not disappear, it just goes to stay somewhere else. it I think this must be fixed but I don't know where to start. I'll file the bug about this "reordering" feature someday as it cause more problems than usability.
