Bug Description

No sound in Armada Series laptops; Specifically Armada 1750.
Failure is repeatable. I tried the steps in the community support documents ( SoundTroubleshooting ) and I have run across a basic problem.
The kernel will not cross the bridge that the ess sound chip uses.
Lspci does not " see " the ess1869 chip, so no drivers are loaded.

it does cross the bridge that the Xircom uses ( PCMCIA Cardbus ) and I " see " that card with no problems.

aplay: device_list: 222: no soundcards found... when I tried an es18xx driver and a kernel rebuild.
I tried being sneaky too and load ALL ess drivers. No luck. I tried installing sb drivers ( it emulates the sb ) no luck.
I have forced a modprobe sb with the proper values ( IRQ and address ) and I get a " click " out of the speakers and just a prompt with no error messages, yet trying to get any kind of mixer running just errors out.

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

I do not know if this is an error that can be resolved easily.

The sound works in W2000pro on this dual boot system.

I think I may have accidentally trashed the last attempt at a rebuild at 3 am..

WARNING: Could not open ' /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko ' : no such file or directory

This repeats in several sets of lines for different files... I may need to move to a different hard drive & another build...

Oh yes, the built in sound ( ESS chip based system ) doesn't work at all. On boot, the system generates clicks like it is initializing the system, but the Linux kernel doesn't see it and starting any ALSA system doesn't see it either.( loudspeaker with an red X icon ).
I have a partial workaround that has limited functionality. This involves adding a USB sound card dongle. I have to control volume on it externally. Some internal mixers don't work. AmaroK does though.
I have dual boot on this Armada 1750 and the internal audio and all of it's functions work just fine in W2000pro.
I troubleshot the problem to the hardware bridge The bridge devices are seen. The ESS chip on the other side is not.
I have posted this workaround on other Linux forums.
I ( and many others ) would like to see a hardware fix.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, can you confirm if this issue still exists in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release or, alternatively the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 which is also scheduled for release today? It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and set the status of the bug to 'new' and the bug will be reviewed again. Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Install still does not recognize ESS sound chip.

Sound still has to be manually installed in etc/modules. I got the fix from other posts.

snd-es1688

sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=0 mpu_io=0x330

System is still unstable after install per other reported bug

Intrepid is not stable enough on the Armada to check out the ESS install. That was the subject of a different bug...

I was able to install a minimum 8.04 system using ubuntu server; I can apt-get the rest; the Kubuntu live disk just blanks the screen in both 8.04 and intrepid.

The ESS sound fix above is not stable; it looks like XINE doesn't properly shut down the ESS chip, restarting any XINE based ALSA system gets no sound output. The application indicates that it is working ( no errors, equalizer in Amarok moving ).

2 weeks ago, I put Intrepid on my Armada (up from gutsy which had jerky sound however it worked fine in the sample movie w/ Nelson Mandela?!)

Same results. Jerky sound at best or system freezes when I attempt to play a cd or mp3.

The sound in this laptop is quite good. It would be wonderful if someone figured this one out. It's been problematic for some time now.

I'm too green to trash this 12 year old machine (which I've beefed up considerably.)

Aeb1barfo,
Please test this against the latest build of Lucid. Should you still see this behavior, please test the latest mainline kernel so that we can verify that the behavior exists in both places and start the investigation into this problem on current software appropriately.

Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,
Sorry I never tested this. I'm only on 8.04 (XUbuntu). I suppose there's
no way to test this without upgrading all the way to 10? The laptop runs
great with 8.04. I used to have 9.10 and it was much slower.
Mind you, it's 12 years old.
Thanks.
