Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

on both edgy and feisty, firefox add-ons can't be install uninstall, disabled.
Preferences can't be accessed either.

how to reproduce:
Go to Tools->Add-ons.
A new window with the installed extensions pop-up.
Trying to access the preferences of an extension just does not open a new window.

Disabling/Uninstalling an extension add the "This add-on will be disabled/uninstalled when Firefox is restarted"

Close firefox,
Restart firefox
The extension is still there with the same previous message ("This add-on will be disabled/uninstalled when Firefox is restarted")

BTW, installed and enabled extensions just don't show up in firefox.

Thank you for the bug report chantra. I will assign this to myself and attempt to reproduce on my Feisty system.

Hi there,

A couple of weeks ago I got the same problem (or a very similar one, at least). None of my extensions' extra options appeared in the "Tools" menu, no extensions worked anymore. I finally found the problem today: some of the files in my firefox profile were read-only! I did:

cd ~/.mozilla
chmod -R u+w *

and that fixed the whole problem for me. No clue how these files got to become read-only though!

Cheers,
Bart

have you preserved your .mozilla directory, so we can track down which
has bad permissions?

chantra, if you can still reproduce this, can you please attach an
strace? To do so, do

 # strace -f firefox &> /tmp/strace_79540.txt

and attach the file.

This did not work for me.

Yep, I attached it to the bug.

I created a new user account. This new user is able to install/uninstall, edit prefs ... in firefox. So the bug might be related to some kind of upgrade (I can't recall since when this started).

What did you do during that strace? Did you try to uninstall an extension?

can't really remember what I'd done.
Here is a new strace where firefox should be removing an addon.

Sorry, I didn't save it. I also checked my last backup, but back then everything was still fine. :-(

I've just run into this problem. After some reading, and noticing that I had dom-inspector installed (cf bug #65916), I removed 'extensions.cache' from my profile and restarted. After this, I could install/upgrade/etc. add-ons again.

I've attached my extensions.cache file from before and after in a single file.
