Sound works only a few weeks per year

Bug Description

For every version of Ubuntu from 5.04 through to 8.04, sound on my Toshiba Satellite SA-50 has been intermittent -- by which I mean it works for a few weeks, then stops working for several months, then starts working for another few weeks, and so on. I've been upgrading regularly.

Possibly related: Whenever I insert an audio CD, I get the error message "The currently selected audio profile is not available on your installation". The message is incorrect, as the list of GNOME audio profiles is empty.

Suspend -> resume -> kernel panic -> restart -> today is the first day sound has worked this year. Just about gave me a heart attack. :-) Will there be anything useful in any log files as a result? If so, where?

On upgrading to Gutsy a couple of weeks ago, sound stopped again. Oh well, maybe next year ...

This needs to be tested and debugged on a development branch of Ubuntu, not on a stable release, if it is to be fixed. Please test on Hardy and contact the kernel team for help.

Hi mpt,

Is this still an issue with the latest 2.6.24-11 kernel? Also you'll want to note that ALSA 1.0.16 in Hardy mutes some sound levels be default so you'll want to make sure all levels are unmuted and turned up. Thanks!

After installing yesterday's kernel update to 8.04, this is still a problem.

Sound returned yesterday after eight months absence. Again, if there will be anything useful in any log files as a result, let me know and I'll attach them.

Hi Mathew,

Just curious what version of the kernel was installed which magically gave you your sound back? Also, now that the Intrepid Alpha releases are coming out, it would be good to get confirmation if this is still resolved or has regressed again. For now I'm going to tentatively mark this "Fix Released". Feel free to change the status back to "New" if this is not the case with current/future releases. Thanks.

Unfortunately sound stopped working again a few days after my previous comment.

I will try with an Intrepid alpha 2 CD when it is released.

Today, as of startup, sound has returned. I renew my offer to post any relevant log files if that helps reveal what the problem was.

After hibernating and resuming, sound has gone once more.

Note to my future self from Daniel T. Chen: Next time sound resumes, attach /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/*.

Sound started again after resuming from hibernate just now.

I've diffed my current codec97#0/* files against the ones I attached before, and they seem to be identical.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately I'll have to say farewell to this bug, because the laptop in question has died. I'm now on a MacBook, which has no sound for (what I assume are) completely different reasons.
