Grub fails to boot kernel with ext3 /boot and xfs /

Bug Description

Error 15: File not found

displayed when trying to do the first boot after installation.

ext3 /boot
xfs /

funny thing is that it tab-completes the filename okay, just won't boot it.

For which file does it report the error? The kernel, the initrd, ...?

Seems to have selected the wrong hard disk device as root.

Selected (hd1,0) instead of (hd0,0)

This could have something to do with having to change the BIOS settings to boot
from CDROM.

This machine has internal SCSI disks (2) and IDE (1). You can't boot CDROM and
SCSI in the same boot sequence however (talk about silly bios).

Technically i guess this situation should be handled.... although i'm not sure
quite which way makes sense.... possibly some probing?

If the order of the BIOS drives really is changed when booting from the CD-ROM,
I don't think we have much hope of detecting that and coping with it.

If I understand you correctly, it sounds like in order to boot from CD-ROM, you
had to change the boot order of your hard disks as well, which seems to have
caused them to be assigned different BIOS drive numbers

It seems impossible to cope with the BIOS drive order changing between these
steps; there is no way to guess the correct device
