The problem seems to affect all installs of 11.10. Marking 'high' importance.

Just updated via update-manager and didn't experience a crash.
$ dpkg -l update-manager
ii update-manager 1:0.152.1
$ dpkg -l python
ii python 2.7.2-1ubuntu2

Although there're still pending packages. (attachement)
Also attached /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py

Just installed a fresh copy of the Alpha 2 and updated through the Update Manager, a partial update, restarted and now as described before, launching the Update Manager makes it and zeitgeist-daemon both close unexpectedly.

Even though it says it said it was a partial update I get no new updates through apt-get.

another one moment:
1) open update-manager
2) get error (alert with 3 options 'Restart program', 'Report a bug', 'Cancel')
3) go to terminal and try to run sudo apt-get update
this is what I have:
$ sudo apt-get update
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/

And I didn't see any update-manager running or any other apt instance.

The other bug got closed because apparently it was an upgrade to karmic. I fail to see why the discussion of this bug should go on to the other report, it's pretty valid still.
