Bug Description

I have two hard drivers on IDE1: hda & hdb, and one CD driver on IDE2: hdc.
After I substituted a new CD-ROM for the old one, there appears another hdd under /dev/.
In fact, I have only one CD driver!
Every time I boot the system, the kernel ring tells:

[4294671.758000] ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio
[4294673.561000] hdd: SCR-830, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
[4294675.841000] hdd: status error: status=0x00 { }
[4294675.841000] hdd: status error: status=0x00 { }
[4294675.841000] hdd: status error: status=0x00 { }

[4294675.891000] hdd: ATAPI reset complete

[4294675.941000] hdd: status error: status=0x00 { }

How can I get rid of this bogus device hdd?

What version of the kernel are you running? You can find out via 'uname -a' in a terminal. What release of Ubuntu are you using? You can find out via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' in a terminal. I am under the impression that your CD-ROM drive is accessible via /dev/hdc is that correct?

I'm sorry not to reply in time.
I'm running the Breezy release of Ubuntu with the kernel of 2.6.12-10-386.
Your impression is right. I can mount the CDROM via /dev/hdc smoothly. But the bogus device /dev/hdd doesn't work at all.
I found this bug the first time I boot the system after substituting my CDROM. When the boot message reads "Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer", the system halts and begins to read the floopy with no stop. So as to boot successfully I stop the HAL daemon manually.
I think all these problems are related to my new CDROM. Because the old one works smoothly and have no errors.

I had asked for help on the Ubuntu Forum, but no one replied. I would appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks a lot.

Thanks for getting back to us. Could you please post the output of 'ls /dev/hd*' and the full output of 'dmesg' to your bug report as an attachment? Thanks in advance.

Here's the "ls" output:
/dev/hda /dev/hda2 /dev/hda6 /dev/hdb1 /dev/hdb5 /dev/hdd
/dev/hda1 /dev/hda5 /dev/hdb /dev/hdb2 /dev/hdc

And the "dmesg" output is in the attachment.
Thanks.

We are closing this bug report as it concerns Breezy which is no longer supported. However, please reopen it if it is still an issue with a supported version of Ubuntu and feel free to submit bug reports in the future.
