Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

I had a firefox window open, and wasn't using it. I was watching update-manager download new updates, all to gnome control panel related items, if I remember correctly. Then 'apport' used up 100% of my cpu for about three minutes. Then I was informed that firefox had crashed and there is now a dialog asking me to report this bug.

Apport wants me to "attach a file" but there is no interface for attaching a file on this page. Very confusing.

Since the file that Apport wants me to attach is 44.3 MB, I won't copy & paste it into here. You can send me email and I will email you the file.

I tried to upload the file that "apport" wanted me to attach but got this instead:

"500 Internal Server Error

An internal server error occurred. Please try again later."

So, my previous comment stands, email me and I will email you the file.

Also, I would suggest that the initial "report a bug" form should say that you can upload an attachment "after you create the bug" or "on the next page" or something like that.

I ran into this problem twice myself. Once with update-manager and just now when running Synaptic to install dia.

I tried to upload the crash report, but ran into the same 500 Server Error when it seemed that the report was finished uploading.

My Firefox session also crashed after update-manager applied some Beryl updates. If needed, I can upload the full report (42 MB!).

Thank you for the bug report. Could you please install firefox-dbg (these are the firefox debugging symbols) and try to obtain a backtrace (or crash report) by following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs
This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

It is of particular interest that you run apport-retrace -d against your crash report before uploading.

Which flash package do you have installed?
Which Java package do you have installed?
Which firefox extensions do you have installed?

j-f-m can you please file a new bug report and attach the full crash report or follow the instructions i gave above for a backtrace.

I'm sorry, but the crash report is long gone. It was in /var/crash/ -- I can only assume that it was cleaned up during reboot or by a cron job.

Maybe the package manager did something to cause the crash, or it could have been just random coincidence -- either way, I have only seen it once and have no way to reliably reproduce it. Next time I see a crash, I'll follow the instructions on the page you mentioned.

I have the standard Flash and Java installed via the package manager:

Shockwave Flash 9.0 r31

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_08-b03

And these extensions:

Adblock 0.5.3.043
Diggler 0.92
Live HTTP Headers 0.13.1
Mouse Gestures 1.5.2
Stop-or-Reload button 0.2.2

Thank you for your bug report, but please understand that crashes are not bugs. Many crashes can be attributed to a flaky plugins, extension conflicts, or other behavior. I am closing this bug for that reason, please feel free to reopen it if you feel the crash is reproduceable. Use one or more of the following criteria: on other releases of Ubuntu, Newer versions of this program, crashes on every load and with up-to-date plugins.

I have encountered a similar crash again. I have opened a new bug with a complete crash report available here:

Glyphobet,

We need the full report. Do you still have it?

As an option you can run apport-retrace on your own and attach the resulting Stacktrace.

Just be sure to install firefox-dbg package first.

No, I'm sorry... I don't have this crash report anymore. I don't know why, but it disappeared from /var/crash/ -- I assume something cleans /var/crash/ out periodically, or at reboot...
