Bug Description

When I Install kubuntu with manual partitionning, ubiquity stops and a kde sessions is started. this problem happens when I click on "Install now" (to apply changes on my hard drives and continue the install process). Once the kde session is started everything is black : xorg, tty etc... I cannot switch to tty1 anymore.

Problem found with: kubuntu desktop amd64 20110803.1.
Also when X is started there is the following message on tty1 : "FATAL: error inserting ramzswap" and "ramzswap.ko: invalid module format"

Thanks for your report.

From the error, the system ran out of memory during installation and decided to kill X.

Changing my VirtualBox memory from 512MB to 1024Mb solves the problem BUT it worked just fine with this hardware topoligy with natty isos :)

It has nothing to do with ramzswap ?

Thanks for following up.
512MB is not enough to install in a VM, it requires at least between 750MB and 800MB otherwise you'll experience all kind of trouble including kernel errors (e.g 790712)

Maybe a note should be added to the minimal requirements specs https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/installation-guide/i386/minimum-hardware-reqts.html

This is definitely something we should sort out and document.

The original report says that this was with Kubuntu. Are the minimal memory requirements for a kubuntu install different than for an ubuntu install? There were certainly reports at release time of 512MB being sufficient for an Ubuntu desktop install. Are the requirements different on real hardware vs. a VM? Is this using the 'Install' or 'Try' boot option? Is it only reproducible with manual partitioning? Does the manual partitioning selection include allocating swap space?
