Bug Description

Binary package hint: konqueror

Unless otherwise specified, konqueror should load with the user's last view profile in place. There are really two bugs here;

a) the icon in kubuntu ships with a hard wired profile - "web browsing" or similar - tied to the konqueror icon. Since 99% of users are probably going to install firefox anyway and use it as their default web browser, this is user unfriendly.

b) let's say I have a profile for music browsing. If the last thing I do when konqueror is closed is browse music, then konqueror arguably should open in the same view profile. Alternatively there should be an option to specify the "default" accessible from the menu options (there no doubt is one in the configuration files somewhere.)

Thank you for filing this bug.

The konqueror shortcut shipped by default says "web browser" in the description, so I want to point out that it's clear that it will be launched in webbrowsing mode.

For file browsing, there's the places menu.

Are you aware of the "konqueror profiles" kicker applet?

OK, fair enough, I worked out how to launch from the command line with a given profile. But I think this should be easier -- there should be a GUI way to set this up.

Additionally I think there needs to be a second icon on the task bar to allow launching of konqueror set up as a file browser -- perhaps two panes, tree view in one, a la windows exploder.

Places menu? Where is this located/

Thanks

Sorry, I meant the "System Menu". It's shipped by default right next to the kmenu on the panel.

There is also a "konqueror profiles" applet that you can add to the panel which sounds like what you are looking for.

Hi.

I absolutely agree with the OP. I noticed this got worse in Edgy. Before that (and since the early kubuntu releases), if I saved a profile it would load the same last settings I used.

I'm one of the few surviving dinosaurs that prefer to use "detailed view". I set that up, save the profile both in Web and File mode, but whenever I launch konqueror again and click "home", I get the Icon View.

I have this behavior in both Edgy and Feisty. I'm not a big fan of using the konqueror profiles kicker, because I launch konqueror (and most things) through Katapult.

Can I provide more information?

I don´t really know if my problem is the same, but it sounds really familiar with my problem:

I always use the Multi-Column-View for file Browsing. I saved it in a new Profile called MyKonqui and I start all instances of Konqueror with konqueror --profile MyKonqui because, otherwise it didn`t saved the viewmode, like described by Paul Tanimoto and Yuriy Kozlov.

But when I go up in the folder hierarchy using the up Arrow (near the back, forward symbol in the toolbar) the viemode changes to icon view, which is really annoying.
This also happens, when I open a new tab. Always the new tab starts in the icon view mode and I have to change it to the multi-column-view I want.

I`m not sure if these problems are just wishes, because they ignore or change the configuration of the user.

Greetings emu

The same here with a fresh install of Kubuntu Feisty. I changed my icons on desktop, kicker and where-ever else to start with the required profiles (Web or File, both with "Detailed List View"). That works good.

When I open a new empty tab, click on home button, then I get again "Icon View," which is not saved in any existing profiles... Fastest workaround is to duplicate an existing tab instead and click home button.

First, it was annoying, now it becomes irritating :-(

The Problem that Konqueror forgets the Multi-Column-View on every new Tab, is solved by the patch provided in this issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/43949

Maybe the whole Profile Problem could be solved by this Patch

For me this bug, doesn't exist further in Gutsy beta.

Anybody else, who is still affected by this?

It still is a problem. I have Kubuntu updated to the current 7.10 Gutsy.

To test, I deleted $HOME/.kde folder, logged in, started konqueror from command line, loaded File Management profile, changed View Mode to Detailed File listing, Saved as File Management profile.

After clicking on "New Tab" icon, the new tab showed again the "Icon" view of the home folder.

For the OP issue I had the same thing and you just need to change the shortcut text as already indicated.

For the other posts by people like me who want a different default file view than the next-to-useless-imho icon view (detailed list view rules!), this link explains how to do it:
http://strabes.wordpress.com/2007/04/05/make-konqueror-use-your-default-view-mode-in-new-tabs/

Not intuitive at all, but it does the trick. It certainly should be a lot easier.

Now if only the proportional window sizes on the navigation panel would be remembered between instances when using "Multiple views"! I use that to enable multiple network shares in the same view a la Windows Explorer since I find it annoying to see multiple drives mixed in with "normal" directories as mount points. Not sure of another way to do it, but even Nautilus does it.

The relevant setting is in konquerorrc:

Hello,

Thanks for reporting this feature request! Unfortunately, at this time Kubuntu does not have the developer manpower needed to implement and maintain many features at the Kubuntu level. This wish would best be reported and tracked at https://bugs.kde.org, so that it can be implemented by the KDE developers themselves. Once implemented in KDE, it will be included in Kubuntu once the KDE version the feature is implemented in reaches Kubuntu.

Thanks!
