Thinkpad T40 was doing an update/upgrade to Feb 4 level. Only thing up was terminal. Pcmanfm was not even started. Does it run in the background doing something for the upgrade?

Aye, I have a strong feeling this is due to Lubuntu Software Center. I just got this bug twice in one hour, both while using LSC.

What is the Lubuntu Software Center? I don't think this bug is exclusively related to its usage because it happened to me too.

Lubuntu software center was installed from the Lubuntu 12.04 iso image. It
is a python application, lubuntu-software-center, that looks like ubuntu
software center. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

No sorry, I forgot the smileys. I was just kidding. What I was actually trying to say is: I never heard of the Lubuntu Software Center before reading this bug report but I'm having the same crashes so it's not uniquely related to the Lubuntu Software Center.

@Christian:
Indeed, I am using pcmanfm on xubuntu, where I do not have any other lubuntu related components, and this crash appears to have happened to me as well.

I can confirm also that it's nothing to do with lubuntu software center, that seems to be having a bug altogether unrealated. PCManFm seems to close by itself on background processes after boot. Upon opening pcmanfm later for file viewing it lasted approx two minutes before dying.
