Logging as a freshly created user does not help.
Also not after the kde login the system hangs, ctrl alt bksp
drops to the command problem, but the system will not
shutdown -h now
it start the shutdown but repeatledly tries to stop kdm and apache2
"to simplify debugging I will uninstalling apache2 and related pkgs"

so I have to power off

with apache2 uninstalled

after the kde login "kde hangs" I think not the system
ctrl alt bksp drops to the command prompt
/etc/init.d/kdm stop fails,
pkill -9 kdm
shutdown -h now brings the system to
mount / busy
will halt
but the system does not, so I need to power off,
shutdown -h now does power down in ubuntu kernel releases prior to 2.6.20

sorry it was late last night quite a few typos :(

Thanks for the additional information. Could you please make kde hang, then switch to a virtual console using Ctrl+Alt+F2 and grab '~/.xsession-errors', '/var/log/Xorg.0.log', 'dmesg' and '/var/log/kdm.log'? Thanks in advance.

Brian,

Did you get the files I sent you in the last email?
I am asking because I don't see my last email message sent on 20070216 here.
This is my first time using launchpad. I generally prefer plan old email.

Tim

When I try to login through kdm with a user which has not used kde before, I don't get a .xsession-errors

So instead I uploaded syslog, please look at the error at the end of the syslog.

Also I can't upload more than one file at a time to launchpad. Please see the tar.

This bug will prevent me and others from upgrading to feisty, from edgy.

Please let me know when you wish to test.
In the mean time I will uninstall the 2.6.20 kernel.
It is the combination of kde and 2.6.20 that don't play well together.

I am currently using kde and a 2.6.20 kernel without any issues. Looking through your syslog and dmesg log I see a kernel error about the rtl8180 driver. As Feisty is fast moving could you please update your kernel and test it again? Thanks in advance.

Yup, kde and 2.6.20 kernel works fine on machines with other graphics
chips sets. Please see my orginal report. So I am not supprised that
you don't have any problems using kde with the 2.6.20 kernel on other
machines. Have you tested?
product: Satellite 3000
vendor: TOSHIBA
version: PS300L-02UKL

I am not currently in front of the laptop, I remember I had the
rtl8180 driver error for the working 2.6.19 kernels too. I will up
load the dmesag log and syslog from the working 2.6.19 kernel so you
can compare them.

I expect the problem is with the graphics chips driver. Can you point
me to a HOWTO use a opensource nv driver so that I can illimate the
binary graphics driver as the problem.

And I tried the 2.6.20.9 kernel a few days ago. No go.

One of your last comments "It is the combination of kde and 2.6.20 that don't play well together" gave me the impression that it was not a hardware issue. Please add the output of 'lspci -vv' and 'lspci -vvn' to your bug report as attachments so we will know what type of graphics card you have. To use the open source nv graphics driver you can just replace the word "nvidia" with "nv" in your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file. While not exactly what you are looking for this wiki page has some information about converting to the binary "nvidia" so you would want to do the opposite thing.

Ouch! I did not read carefully this bug, but you are likely to
hit bug #78255 with this wireless? network card, which cause
a oops, and after that, system can be unstable.

Having looked at the dmesg log, I am confident enough to declare it
a duplicate of bug #78255. Still, I could be wrong.

Caused by wifi

This bug only occurs when the wifi card is used.
kde and 2.6.20.9 are happy together without the wifi.
Tonight when I have more time I will do some more testing.

Be aware that a new version of module-init-tools 3.3-pre3-1ubuntu3
will deactivate your wifi card (blacklist the device) until a real fix for
the bug is found. As it is said at the end of bug #78255.
