Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox has been intermittently crashing when posting a reply to a message on the AnandTech forums (http://forums.anandtech.com). I posted a few messages earlier today without issue but just replied to another topic and Firefox crashed.

1. Log into AnandTech forums
2. Find a message and open the link
3. Click on one of the 'Reply' buttons
4. Type text of message
5. Click 'Add Reply' button
6. Firefox crashes

What should happen is the 'reply' window will close and the main page will refresh including the new post. This crashing has happened several times and (so far) has not happened at any other time. The last time I launched Firefox I did so from a terminal so I could look for some error output. Here's what I got:

(Gecko:15252): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GtkWidget'

(Gecko:15252): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GObject'

(Gecko:15252): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_get_data: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Sorry... I tried to submit the 29MB crash report but I posted another message on AnandTech and it crashed it during the upload. If necessary I'll try again later.

Hi,

can you reproduce this issue easily? or does it happen sporadically? Maybe you have other firefox windows or tabs open when this happens?

Hello, I also have the same problem (xtknight from Anandtech).

For me at least, this is very hard to reproduce so I will have to get more details if/when it happens again. What I do know is that the whole Firefox program crashes and every window/tab I have open closes immediately. The session seems to remain saved, though.

I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu Edgy with the Ubuntu Firefox package from synaptic. What about you Robor?

Hello Alexander... Sorry for the delayed reply here. I am still experiencing the crashing here but because I've been busy at work (where the system with the crashing is occuring) I haven't been posting as much so I don't have much new info to offer. I will try to upload that crash report file again when I submit this.

Hi xtknight: I am running the x386 32-bit Ubuntu on an IBM T42. My Firefox version is just the default that comes with it. I do have some add-ons installed and I do have flash installed as well. My symptoms are the same as yours. I submit a post or send a PM and the window I submitted disappears. The main window which should reload freezes. By that I mean I can't interact with it if it's focused. If it's in the background I can't click on it in the panel or alt-tab to it. Shortly after that it disappears. If I have multiple Firefox windows or tabs open they all crash. Only 2 times has it given me the option to report the crash. My session also remains saved.

I wanted to add that this behavior happened on my other laptop as well. I don't post on AnandTech very often with it so maybe the problem has been there all along and I just experienced it now by chance. I was not presented with a dialog box to report the crash though.

I just experienced another crash while submitting a post. This one crashed with a different error in the terminal window I launched Firefox from. Unfortunately I stupidly closed the window instead of copied the text to paste here. I will submit the crash report file here.

Experienced another crash. This crash was caused by typing a URL into the address bar and hitting enter. I have been launching Firefox from the command line to see the output of the crash but this time I got no error message - just the crash. Here's the output showing me launching and no new .crash file...

robor007@Home-T42-Ubuntu:~$ firefox
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
robor007@Home-T42-Ubuntu:~$ cd /var/crash
robor007@Home-T42-Ubuntu:/var/crash$ ls -la

-rw------- 1 robor007 robor007 35673942 2007-02-22 10:50 _usr_lib_firefox_firefox-bin.1000.crash

I should note that I upgraded Firefox from 2.0.0.1 > 2.0.0.2 via apt this morning.

Had another crash replying to a PM on Anandtech. 'Operating Systems' forum open, clicked on the new PM from there, opens the new PM, click on Reply button, type message, send the reply. Firefox crashes only this time with a slightly different result in the terminal. Here's the output:

Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment

(Gecko:2350): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GtkWidget'

(Gecko:2350): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GObject'

(Gecko:2350): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_get_data: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

**Note the 'Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment'. I haven't seen that in any previous crashes. I have a new .crash file I'm going to submit with this message.

So far the 2 crashes that i retraced seem to be the same. If it crashes again while doing the same thing ther eis no need to report it here as we have enough crash reports to determine what is causing the crash. I will try to have the report done ASAP.

This seems to be the same issue causing the crash.

This will be fixed in Feisty. For Edgy however we can only add security patches to it, and from reading backport policies we are not able to backport FireFox. However this has been nominated for 1.8.1.3 from upstream. If it is fixed in upstream version than its likely it will be fixed in 2.0.0.3 release, and than we will beable to fix this issue for edgy. We are looking into this and keeping track of it so we know what we can do with it.

Thanks for the info John & Alexander. I will relay this on to the guys on AnandTech who are also having the same crash issue. I think I'm going to give Feisty a try on my personal laptop and see how it goes. Even if it borks my system there's no risk as I'll clone the drive before I do the upgrade. :-)

John:

When it happens on my PC I don't seem to have any dumps in /var/crash, at least last time I checked. The next time I start Firefox it asks me if I want to restore my session, that's about the only thing different that I can tell when this happens.
