gnome-compiz- manager (the package that provides GL Desktop) isn't an Ubuntu package.
Secondly, the backtrace suggests that you've got the compiz-extra plugins installed. If these are built against the wrong version of compiz, they will crash compiz on startup. With the latest compiz and compiz-extra packages from Universe (1:0.3.6-1ubuntu7 and 0.3.6.0-1 at the moment) do you see the same crash?
