Bug Description

No notification pops up any more since the update to Ubuntu 11.10 when someone mentions my nickname in an IRC channel.

When switching back to the conversation windows the tab of the channel in which my nick name was mentioned is highlighted but no notification did pop up.

None of the pings give any audio notifications. I can understand if some ping is there channels only opening the chat window. but no visual pop are coming.

Using Gnome Shell.

I have the same problem on jabber (XMPP).

First time somebody talk to me via Empathy, and my Empathy chat window is closed, the message icon changes to color blue.
After opening the chat window, I don't receive notifications anymore. The message icon stay on it's default color.

Ronan, yours is a different issue I believe. As far as I can tell you are talking about Unity, not GNOME-Shell. Also, all other protocols, including xmpp, work fine here. The issue with IRC is different because normally many "normal" messages can be received through IRC without a need for a notification. A notification should only be raised if one of the received messages is specifically addressed to me by e.g. including my name.

It would be better to file a different bug report in your case.

Forage,
It was I who suggested that this bug report probably covers the lack of notifications that Ronan describes. You may want to read the message that Ronan posted to ubuntu-devel-discuss:

Forage,

Does the scenario described by Ronan really work for you? If a new message is received in an already open XMPP chat does the message icon turn blue?

I ask this because I have the same behavior as Ronan!

Chandru,

No this does not happen because I'm using GNOME-Shell, not Unity, as explained earlier. GNOME-Shell does not have an icon that changes colour when messages are received.
