Runtime Revolution progs do not run directly from pendrive in Feisty Flight 4

Bug Description

In previous versions of Ubuntu, Runtime Revolution programs can be run directly from a pendrive by double-clicking on their icon.

In Feisty Fawn Flight 4, this does not happen. Instead, the following message is given:

"Cannot open /media/KINGSTON/revapp
No application suitable for automatic installation is available for handling this kind of file"

If it is a bug, I hope to see it fixed. If it is a new "feature", I don't want it. Runtime Revolution apps can still be run in this manner from the Desktop, and I see no reason why they should not run in a similar manner directly from a common pendrive.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add a url to your bug report where we could download a Runtime Revolution program to test? Thanks in advance.

And thanks for your prompt attention.
Navigate to the following page and click on the "Download" link** to
download #0.197 of my SpamGobbler program:

http://www.howsoft.com/linux/spamgobbler/spamgobbler_download_and_release_notes.htm

You can also find general info about this prog at:

http://www.howsoft.com/linux/spamgobbler/

**For an example of a simpler Runtime Revolution standalone program, you
can also click on the "testdefaultfolder.zip" link lower down on this
same page.

[Sorry about "Flight": it should be "Herd"]

The inability to run Runtime Revolution standalone apps directly from
the pendrive in Feisty Herd 4 also applies to Rebol standalone apps. The
message given by Feisty is:

"Cannot open /media/KINGSTON/userapp
No application suitable for automatic installation is available for
handling this kind of file"

Such Runtime Revolution and Rebol apps are called "standalones" because
that is what they are meant to be: they do not at present require any
kind of installation and they can be run directly from any location in
the file system, including from media such as pendrives. Setup utilites
are not provided by Runtime Revolution or by Rebol simply because they
are not required, and as far as I know there is no such thing as a
general purpose setup utility provided by Ubuntu themselves.

If this is a new "feature" rather than a bug, will it later be extended
to other locations in the file system such as the Desktop or the User
Home folder? And if it is a "feature", what are its motives? Under this
scenario, existing applications written in RunRev or Rebol would be
completely clobbered!

Time has passed, April 19th is getting closer, and still there is no
report from Ubuntu as to whether this is a bug or a feature has appeared.

It should be understood that this is potentially a very serious matter
that perhaps requires treatment at the very highest level, and for this
reason I have sent copies of this post to Mr Kevin Miller of Runtime
Revolution and Mr Carl Sassenrath of Rebol Technologies.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, this bug is a duplicate of bug 87627 and is being marked as such. That bug deals with USB devices being mounted noexec (with no execute permissions) as opposed to exec which is the way they used to be. An update to gnome-mount has been released and that should resolve your issue. Feel free to submit any future bugs you may find.

OK, thank you very much Brian.
Now I can sleep at night!

Best regards,
