Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I am running edgy on a Dell Inspiron 6400. It has a broadcom 1340 (I think it is) and is running wifi under ndsiwrapper, the latest version. For the most part, networkmanager works fine. However, I am visiting a place where I was trying to join a network I don't normally use, and it was unable to join. What is odd is that wlassistant *is* able to make it work. The network is unencrypted, and its name is lbnl-wlan58

Here are the relevant lines from daemon.log when it failed

Hey Mitch, can you connect to any *open* access points (i.e., access points that do not use any encryption)? I have had a problem with network-manager since Dapper, I believe, which prevents me from connecting to open networks. network-manager *will* connect properly to WEP-encrypted networks; I haven't tried WPA. I can connect to any network (non-encrypted or WEP) by using wifi-radar or the command line.

Mitch Golden (mgolden) wrote : Re: [Bug 89092] Re: Unable to connect to an open network, wlassistant can connect

That is what is sort of strange about it. This is not a problem in
general with networkmanager and open networks. Usually networkmanager
works. But there was something about that particular network that it
wouldn't connect to. I have a vague sense it had something to do with the
network ssid (maybe having "wlan" in it or something) because the log file
said something about trying to set the ssid to '' as the last thing it did
before it gave up.

I could see the network in both networkmanager (knetworkmanager, to be
precise) and wlassistant, and get the strength of it in both. (The
strength was good, at the time). I just couldn't connect to it with
networkmanager.

I know it's not a hardware/driver problem, because wlassistant can
connect. (I don't use it normally, because it doesn't support WPA.) I
have never tried wifi-radar, so I don't know what it is.

I just tried testing with a Live CD. (I can't install Gutsy since I use by Dell Inspiron 6400 for production work - it has Feisty on it). Here's the problem: when I install ndiswrapper on the machine, it generally requires a power-cycle reboot to get the card to work. Or at least, that's how I usually do it. Of course with a Live CD that brings the machine back to the uninstalled state.

Perhaps I can try something else if I can think of it, but I didn't want to wait longer before replying.

Could you please test with latest gutsy network-manager: >=
0.6.5-0ubuntu15 ?

Thanks,

The latest Gutsy networkmanager does not recognize a Broadcom wifi with ndiswrapper and the bcmwl5.inf driver.
Dmesg shows that the driver and device are working as eth1.

I can almost work around knetworkmanager with kwlan or configuring wpa_supplicant directly.

This driver and chipset have worked with Feisty. Kubuntu's knetwork manager is always a little more difficult.

I'm using Kubuntu 7.10 rc on a Dell e1505 or 6400.

I have the same problem.

Writing this comment connected to an open network, so it obviously USUALLY works fine.

Earlier today tried connecting to two different open networks and both generated the
same problems. /var/log/syslog visually looked like the first report on the problem here.

I'm attaching my own /var/log/syslog

Observe that prior to migrating from WinXP to Kubuntu 7.10 connecting with wireless
to both of the problematic accesspoints have never failed for me.
