Thanks for helping improve Ubuntu by reporting this issue! In Ubuntu 11.10 the guest account code is included in the lightdm package, and gdm-guest-session does not work, so you can safely remove the latter manually.

Martin:
Is there a way to make gdm-guest-session be removed automatically at distupgrade to > 11.04?

I removed gdm-guest-session from precise, it's obsolete.

We need to add a Breaks: to gdm to clean it up during upgrades.

This bug was fixed in the package gdm - 3.0.4-0ubuntu14

Perhaps, I wonder why we don't see more duplicates. We need to verify first that this really fixes things by testing a full upgrade, though.
